Bluesky Deactivation, Side Project Initiated

After some deliberation, I have decided to deactivate my Bluesky account. This decision is reversible, and my username is bound to this domain, so I’m not worried about someone squatting it.

While there’s always some fresh thing to be mad about, today I opened the app to be greeted, immediately, by a post trying to be cool, and dismissing tech workers as useless while also being touchy about being called useless. Cool. It’s just got the energy of a bunch of crabs in a pot of boiling water. Let’s just keep tearing each other down to look cool.

I need space from the place. Much like Twitter/X, it is primarily an engine for exaggeration, outrage, arguments, and unkindness to run rampant. Anyone who thinks Twitter stopped being good when Elon took over was not paying attention, or even worse, are part of the problem. The site’s been an unusable mess for ages, as someone who was on the site from 2009 until 2024 or so. It’s something about the design of the platform itself, not who is in charge of it. Many of the people who contributed to that nonsense on Twitter brought that same energy to Bluesky, and it was there from the start.

Maybe I’ll go back, but I really hope I don’t. No more everything apps, please. If Bluesky doesn’t work out, we don’t all need to go to the same somewhere else. I’m exhausted from having access to everyone all the time, and vice versa. It’s not good for us.

In other news, I’ve decided to embark on a new mini project. It involves parsing Markdown to, hopefully, make my blog entries a little bit easier to produce for the site. I’m using Ruby, which is a language I have very little experience with, so I’m hoping that keeps it fresh.

Time will tell!
